aYo Holdings
aYo Holdings, a partnership between MTN, a Telecom operator in several African countries, and life insurance company Sanlam of South Africa, was at the forefront in expanding microinsurance across Africa. By offering accessible and affordable coverage in Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Nigeria, aYo served nearly 30 million policyholders.
In collaboration with Silvermoon, aYo established its core insurance administration platform using LUNOS, enabling seamless policy management and product customization. The open architecture of LUNOS allowed aYo to deliver hospital and life cover through both Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and Progressive Web App (PWA) services. These solutions were specifically designed to address challenges like limited internet access and irregular income patterns in key markets. Furthermore, aYo empowered clients to purchase insurance and even log claims directly via their cell phones, leveraging straight-through processing that seamlessly connected clients’ devices to back-end systems.
These achievements were made possible by the flexibility and versatility of LUNOS, which enabled aYo to create a solution that significantly broke away from traditional insurance models.
Through its partnership with Silvermoon, aYo brought financial security to underserved communities, transforming insurance into a practical and accessible tool for millions. While aYo’s microinsurance operations have since concluded, Silvermoon is proud to have been part of this impactful journey, driving innovation and inclusion across Africa.
